چکیده

The recent discovery of superconductivity at ~39 K in MgB2, by Nagamatsu et al.1 establishes this simple binary compound as having the highest bulk superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of any non-copper-oxide material. Much of the initial research has focused on whether MgB2 is a conventional BCS, electron-phonon mediated superconductor, and, if it is, why Tc is so high. Isotope effect measurements, in which the atom masses are manipulated to systematically change the phonon frequencies, are one of the fundamental experimental tests of electron-phonon mediated superconductivity. One would expect the total isotope effect coefficient, i.e. the sum of both the Mg and B coefficients, to be 1/2 for a highTc, phonon mediated, simple sp orbital superconductor like MgB2. We find a value of 0.32(1), much reduced from the canonical BCS value of 0.5. This requires large values of λ (electron-phonon coupling constant) and μ* (repulsive electron-electron pseudopotential) to account for the high Tc and, thus, constrains any theoretical model for superconductivity in MgB2.

Micro - Raman scattering investigation of MgB 2 and RB 2 ( R = Al , Mn , Nb and Ti )

Phonon spectra have been investigated by micro-Raman scattering from 290 to 20K. New peaks at 500 and 674 cm appear below 250K in MgB2. These peaks are explained by the Fermi resonance, where Raman-active E2g intereacts with the overtone of E1u due to anhamonicity. Raman spectra of the isostructural RB2 (R=Al, Mn, Nb and Ti) have been also measured at 290K. The line width of E2g phonon of the s...

Superconductivity in Fe and As based compounds: A bridge between MgB2 and cuprates

By interpreting various experimental data for the new high temperature FeAs type superconductors in terms of lattice mediated multigap superconductivity, it is shown that these systems strongly resemble MgB2, however, with the distinction that local polaronic lattice effects exist. This fact establishes a connection to cuprate high temperature superconductors where polaron formation is essentia...

Two-band effect on the temperature and the angle dependences of the ratio of the surface to the bulk superconductivity in MgB2

We investigated the ratio of the surface superconducting field (Hc3) to the bulk superconducting field (Hc2) in MgB2 single crystals at different temperatures and at different angles between the field and the c-axis of the crystal by using electrical transport measurements. The temperature dependence of the ratio Hc3/Hc2 at different angles was qualitatively well described by a recent theory ba...

Anisotropic s-wave superconductivity: comparison with experiments on MgB2 single crystals

– The recently discovered superconductivity in MgB2 has captured world attention due to its simple crystal structure and relatively high superconducting transition temperature Tc = 39K. It is generally accepted that it is phonon-mediated s-wave BCS-like superconductivity. Surprisingly, the strongly temperature dependent anisotropy of the upper critical field, observed experimentally in magnesiu...
